Adult male farmers residing in the southwestern province of Sichuan have been primarily affected. Although Chinese health authorities are attributing this outbreak to Streptococcus suis, a bacterium that mainly affects pigs, insufficient data are available for confirmation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), additional laboratory-confirmed cases of type 1 poliovirus have been reported from Ethiopia, bringing the total number of cases to 14 since the outbreak was first reported in February 2005. Prior to the detection of a polio case (with onset of paralysis on December 21, 2004) in the country’s Tigray region, Ethiopia had been polio-free since 2001. Polio cases have now been reported from the Tigray and Amhara regions in northern Ethiopia. The cases in Ethiopia have been virologically linked to a large-scale polio outbreak in Sudan that began in May 2004.
