SAMHSA Accepting Applications for Grants for Substance Abuse Treatment Programs: "The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is soliciting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2008 Targeted Capacity Expansion Program for Substance Abuse Treatment and HIV/AIDS Services. This program aims at enhancing and expanding substance abuse treatment and/or outreach and pretreatment services that are provided in conjunction with HIV/AIDS services performed in the African American, Latino/Hispanic, and other racial and ethnic communities highly affected by the epidemics of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS."

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- In observance of the Chinese New Year, the U.S. Postal Service will debut a new stamp series for the 12 different animals in the Chinese calendar. The series will continue through 2019. The first 41-cent stamp in the series is for the Year of the Rat, which begins Feb. 7, 2008 and ends Jan. 25, 2009 and will be dedicated tomorrow in an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, 1111 California St.

Infiniti SUV earns top safety award

ARLINGTON, VA -- The new Infiniti EX35, a luxury SUV, earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award for 2008. The EX35 is the first Infiniti to earn this award. Top Safety Pick winners afford superior overall crash protection among the vehicles in their class. To qualify a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control.

ETA Announces Grant Funds under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Opportunities

The Employment and Training Administration (ETA) has announced the availability of approximately $10 million in grant funds for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Opportunities in the Workforce System Initiative (STEM Initiative). These grants will be awarded through a two-phased competitive process to primarily expand and align current and new STEM workforce education and training strategies, activities, and resources in One Stop Career Centers to promote, attract, and prepare disadvantaged youth and dislocated workers for STEM careers, while simultaneously enhancing the competitive position of local and regional employers.

While not always sitting still for very long, they normally eat enough calories to grow and thrive. Our role as parents and caretakers is to ensure they are offered a variety of foods that provide the calories and nutrients their growing, busy bodies need during their early years. Toddlers need to decide what and how much they eat of the foods offered to them.

California Climate Champions Program: Young Californians (aged 16-18) are invited to apply

Climate Change is one of the most important challenges facing the world. The increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, through the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, has led to dramatic changes in the Earth's climate, including warmer average temperatures and more frequent severe weather events like droughts and hurricanes. We're inviting young people from California who are concerned about the issue, committed to making a difference and good at communicating, to become Climate Champions. As a champion you will engage other people in schools, neighborhoods and communities in finding ways to address climate change.
