Study Shows Vitamin A Suppresses Type 1 Diabetes in Animal Study

Pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes and many other holiday favorites are rich in vitamin A, a nutrient essential for good health. Now a study by Agricultural Research Service ( ARS ) nutrition scientists has shown, for the first time, that high levels of vitamin A can suppress development of type 1 diabetes in laboratory mice prone to that disease.

IRS Update: 2008 Excise Taxes on Air Transportation

WASHINGTON -- Today the Internal Revenue Service announced the 2008 inflation adjustments to the excise taxes on air transportation. Excise taxes apply to the domestic segments of taxable air transportation and to the use of international air facilities. The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008, signed into law on Dec. 26, 2007, extends these excise taxes to air transportation that begins or is paid for no later than Feb. 29, 2008.

As it relates to Hourly Rate for Employees in the Computer Software Industry: Existing law exempts a professional employee in the computer software field from the overtime compensation requirement if the employee is primarily engaged in work that is intellectual or creative, the employee's hourly rate of pay is not less than $41, and the employee meets other requirements. This bill decreases the hourly rate of pay requirement for this exemption to not less than $36.

Shopping Channel HSN Agrees to Pay $875,000 Civil Penalty

CPSC alleged that from September 2001 through about October 2004, HSN received at least 25 reports from consumers indicating that the pressure cookers contained a defect that could create a substantial product hazard or that the pressure cookers created an unreasonable risk of serious injury. CPSC alleged that HSN failed to immediately report this information as required by federal law. HSN LP finally reported information to CPSC in February 2005.
