Warning Pig Owners: Human Illness Associated With Contact With Pigs, China

Warning Pig Owners: Human Illness Associated With Contact With Pigs, China: "According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of August 3, 2005, the Ministry of Health of China has reported 206 human cases, including 38 deaths, from an illness that presents with fever, malaise, nausea, and vomiting, and rapidly progresses to meningitis, subcutaneous hemorrhage, toxic shock, and coma. Adult male farmers residing in the southwestern province of Sichuan have been primarily affected. Although Chinese health authorities are attributing this outbreak to Streptococcus suis, a bacterium that mainly affects pigs, insufficient data are available for confirmation. WHO is monitoring the situation closely and recommending further diagnostic tests, as a large outbreak from this disease in humans is not typical."
